An urgent appeal has been issued by the Defence authorities to-day for 1000 men to register at once to make up the 000 required for the infantry of the Eleventh Reinforcements. The pre»ent response is viewed with grave concern, because if the numbers are once not made up the position will be serious, It would mean that New Zealand lias failed for the first time, not only to fulfil her pledge to the Imperial Government, but also in her duty to our own force to maintain its strength required in the field. It has 'been represented that this is due to the desire of men not to spend the holidays in camp, but if this is true it is considered that it could only bp due to the failure of New Zealand manhood to understand the urgency of the call. Now the facts are placed' before them the department is confldenO the requirements will be met immediately.
