DISTRICT NEWS.

OPUXAKE. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Caledonian Society do not intend holding sports here on Boxing Day, but the usual concert and dance will take place. Death has again been busy in our midst. An old and respected settler, Mr. Peter Dalton, passed to his rest on Friday night. His funeral, took place on Monday, the Rev. Dr. Kelly conducting the service, both at the-Church and 'grave side. On Saturday night the death of Elizabeth Ellen ("Bessie") Mildenhall occurred with startling suddenness. She was about as usual in the early part of the week. On Saturday her parents found it advisable to take her to the private hospital in Manaia, where in spite of all that the Doctors and nurses could do she passed away. The bereaved parents have the sincere sympathy of the whole community.

TAMKI. (From Our Own Correspondent). Last Sunday was a beautiful day, the first fine Sunday after ten wet ones. Every one enjoyed it, but a local farmer reports his peaceful enjoyment was somewhat marred towards the end of the afternoon by a scries of untowara events. First he got a call from his son who was rounding up the milkers that one of his best had got her head lived in a whitewood tree, and couldn't back out. However, a little manoeuvring with a handsaw and axe soon got over this trouble, when another hopeful came in with the cheerful news that the bull, a choice animal, was stretched out. A brief view convinced him that Taurus was indeed a goner, and fixed the funeral for next morning. Adjourning to the cowshed, having lit up, he sat down to milk his first in a meditative mood, from which he was roused by a quick call from his better half to come up to the house and find ou't where all the smoke was coining from. He went ''at the double." closely followed by sonny, who aft' brief consultation, struck out to the township for assistance. Meanwhile, the rest of the family, by concerted action, managed to put out the fire. On the alarm reaching the township the boys lost no time in getting off the mark and within three minutes from notice, the volunteer fire-brigade were on the scene and ready for action. Messrs C. Julian. L. Smith. S. Laurence. and Stephenson, of the ninth reinforcements, are at present on extended leave from Tauherenikau.
