STRATFORD SHOW

AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS. . SPLENDID ENTRIES AND GOOD ORGANISATION OFFICIALS. Judges.—Thoroughbred and harness horses: F. Evans, Masterton; F. B. Donnelly, Waipukurau. Draught horses: A. .Alexander, New Plymouth. Jersey Cattle: E. D. McLennan, Papakura. Ayrshire Cattle: G. Carter, Porirua. Ilolstein Cattle: C. T. Barriball, Waiuku. Fat Cattle: 0. Hawken, Hawera. Sheep: C. J. Hawken, Mokoia. Pigs: G. Castle, Hawera. Fat Pigs: J. Burke, Eltliam. Home industries: F. A. Cramer, Stratford. Piekles and preserves: Mrs. Alex. Alexander, New Plymouth. Sewing and fancy work: Miss 11. E. Lewis, New Plymouth. Art section: Miss H. E. Lewis, New Plymouth. Poultry: S. Johnston, Palmerston North. Dogs: S. Johnston, Palmerston North. Dogs, working: B. Boyle, Te Wej-a. One day test: N. Fulton, New Plymouth. The members of the Stratford A. and P. Society are to be congratulated on the success that attended the opening day of the sixth annual show yesterday, a success that is thoroughly deserved, because ever since the inauguration of the Society the committee has shown that it was out for progress and would leave 110 stone unturned to carry out its ideal of making Stratford the premier dairy show of the district, and this it is rapidly becoming. A very enthusiastic committee was elected for the opening show, and that enthusiasm has, contrary to the usual custom, not been allowed to die out, bu£ has year by .year been augmented. By progressive methods in catering for the comfort and convenience of exhibitors and public alike the function has become very popular. The Stratford Show lias one advantage in that it covers a wide scope, and, by catering for all classes, the Society has made a host of friends. Exhibitors speak in high terms of the attention that both they and their stock receive at the hands of the committee, the plentiful amount of green feed available in the Society's own paddocks meeting with general favor among owners of pedigree cattle, who are able to enter their beasts with the knowledge that they will have every attention. As was only to be expected under the unusual conditions prevailing this year, entries are not quite up J last year's mark in numbers, but tin msiderably exceeded expectations and the grand parade to-day should be well worth witnessing.

Cattle predominate, and it is questionable if anywhere a finer collection of dairy cattle could be viewed. It is interesting to note, too, that, save in the Holsteins, all the cattle are owned in Taranalti. Jerseys are the strongest numerically, and attracted considerable interest. TKe judge had a very difficult task in making his awards, particularly in the yearling, sections. A feature was the class for butter-fat, this bringing into" comparison both the utility and show ring classes. R. J. Linn's Belvedere Rose scored the championship in both classes, Polliek's Belvedere Bilberry V being reserve. Vesta's Campanile, which won the championship at Hawera, was placed third. The wonderful old bull Lord Twylish again scored the championship, the judge remarking that he shows great type and remarkable vigor for his age. In grade Jerseys the judge was pleased with what were shown, but considered that they might have been represented stronger. Ayrshires as a whole were very good, the champions being fit for any show. Again was the Hawera decision reversed, F. Mill's Bonnie Lad, a two-year-old, defeating Little Jim, the" Hawera champion. In Holsteins competition was between the two leading breeders of the Dominion, viz., Messrs W. I. Lovelock and Newton King. The former won both championships, while Mr. Newton King, with two entries, obtained two firsts.

The horse classes are not filled over well, though the quality is all that can be desired. The competitions were very interesting, some fine jumping and riding being witnessed, particularly in ithe ladies' jumping, Miss Cleaver, who rode six of the seven entrants, evoking applause by her brilliant equestrianism. Sheep were, numerically, a disappointment, though some good quality was shown. Pigs were shown in bigger numbers than previously, though there is still room for more interest being shown in this valuable side line. That pigs can be well "done" in Taranaki was evidenced from the samples exhibited. Dogs were quite up to Stratford's high stanrta'rd, exhibits, being benched from all over the Island. Home industries, also, were good, the ladies evincing keen interest in this section. In dairy produce, save in the homemade butter, there was poor competition, and the Society would do well to consider eliminating the factory classes from the schedule. Fowls, too, were not benched as strongly as could be desired. The organisation throughout was excellent, everything working witli the precision of clockwork, due to having the right men in the right places. Mr. R. Masters, as president, kept keen eye on the whole machinery, while the secretary, Mr. A. 1). Stanley, and his coadjutor, Mr. S. Wood, handled the onerous duties of their department with ease and precision. Mr. W. T. Kirkwood made an ideal press steward, and too much praise cannot be given to the willing messengers who kept the press-room well supplied with the results of the judging, which commenced early and was carried on expeditiously. There are numerous machinery exhibits and side shows, some of the latter being much above the average. The catering is in the capable hands of Dustins, Ltd., Mr. F. Whittle having the publican's booth.

For the opening day yesterday the weather remained fine, and the attendance was fair. With the .special train facilities there should be a record gathering to-day. The coinpotit'-ins this afternoon will include the watur jump, which should be particularly interesting. The grand parade of stock and horses—as well as Stratford's uwn innovation, the dog parade—will serve to give the most casual visitor some idea of the importance of the show.
