AUCKLAND CARNIVAL

A TOTAL OF £340,000, QUEEN OF THE SOUTH ELECTED. Auckland's effort to raise £250,000 as a patriotic fuud has proved entirely successful. The scheme was heartily entered into in every part of the province, and as a result the amount aimed at will be exceeded by nearly £IOO,OOO. A Carnival Queen election hag been in progress, and concluded at noon on Monday. By this means £260,000 was raised. Mrs. Bollard, who is "Queen of the South," won the election with 4,416,020 votes, valued-at £35,000; Mrs. Harding, "Queen of the North," was second with 3,206,427 votes; Mrs. E. W. Porritt, "Queen of"the East" third, and Mrs Wallingford "Soldier's Queen" fourth. The total realised from the Carnival is £261,462, bringing the patriotic fund total to roughly £340,000. The coronation ceremony is expected to add still further to the total. Monday's Auckland Star says that through the morning the office of the Queen Carnival Executive was besieged by committeemen paying in cash and handing over vouchers, and the voting was on an entirely unprecedented scale. So great was the volume of work thrown upon the staff that at three o'clock, after three hours' work, the final checked figures were not available, although it was understood that Mrs. Bollard had won by a substantial majority. Auckland's Carnival had been the most successful of all the patriotic appeals in this form, and the comparison with what has been achieved in other parts Is shown by the following figures:—

Auckland ......-;■..■«...■•„■ 260,000 Dunedin -.....-.-.-. 120,134 Invercargill w .v. s *. 66.000 Wellington *...-, .-., raw 03,053 Gisbome . .•.-.■-»,. .|. : .,.-., 35,000 Chvistchurch sv ..w.. 33,000 Timaru .........*.... 11,000 At 3 p.m., on Monday, the positions were as follows: Quen of the Smith (Mrs. R. At this stage the total number of votes was close on 21 million, which represented £260,000 cash value. During the course of the morning close on £70,000 in cash was received in the Carnival rooms. At the time of going to press it was estimated that there was a further £IO,OOO worth of votes to be dealt with and allocated to the various candidates.
