BRITAIN.

A BRITISHER FIRST. IABORITE SCORES A BRILLIANT WIN. * CRASHING DEFEAT OF ANTI-WAR PART?. London, Nov. 26. The result of the Merthyr Tydvil byelection was:— Stanton „„..-..,-.-.-... 10,280 ■ Winstone ».«,.„.„ 5,090 Majority for Stanton 5,206 •. Beceived Nov. 27, 8.30 p.m. London, Nov. 27. Mr. Stanton's victory is regarded as Of the greatest significance. Merthyr is a stronghold of the Independent Labor Party and is well organised. Mr. Keir Hardie's followers were determined that new members should share in his antiwar views, and there was evidence that Mr. Ramsay Mac Donald was warmly supporting Mr. Winstone on questions of the war and was prepared to accept him as a fitting successor to Mr. Keir Hardie. , The result shows that Mr. Stanton has a strong personal influence with the miners, despite the fact that Mr. Winstone was the official Labor candidate. Mr. Stanton is an advanced Socialist, but »is all for the war. He has warmly supported the Coalition Ministry, favors conscription if it is necessary, and has opposed syndicalism and peace talk, thus capturing most Liberal and many Unionist votes. The Pall Mall Gazette says that the first contest fought in England on war issues has ended in the complete and crushing defeat of the only party which had a definite anti-patriotic policy. (A cable dated London, November 25, said: In connection with the Labor contest at Merthyr, Mr. Stanton has resigned the leadership of the miners, disapproving of the views of the local branch of the Independent Labor Party. Mr. Stanton declares that, though a Socialist, he is a Britisher first. He has decided to oppose Mr. Winstone, the Independent labor Party's selected candidate.) IRELAND NOT A CINDERELLA. *HE KAISER'S MISCALCULATIONS. London, Nov. 26. The Daily Chronicle states that the I6th "All Irish" Division is composed of Catholics, Nationalists, and Ulster Protestants, and commanded by General Parsons. It has completed its training and is ready for the front. The officers include Mr. John Redmond's son and his brother William. The Chronicle adds that Ireland 13 no longer the Cinderella of Europe, standing sullenly aloof. Her brigades will do for England what General Sarsfield's soldiers did in the war of Spanish Succession, and Dclacey and his fellow Irishmen did in France at Fontenoy. Mr. John Redmond says the completion of the new Division shows the Kaiters flagrant miscalculation in counting on the hostility of the Green Isle toward Britain. For the first time in historv Ireland is eager to do her full duty for the Empire, which no longer stands for oppression, but for the independence of small nations and the freedom of the THE CALL FdR MUNITIONS. LABOR LEADER INTERVIEWED. Received Nov. 27, 8.15 p.m. London, Nov. 27. The Paris Journal interviewed Mr Thomas, who said that each delegate at the London Munitions Conference submitted his own country's requirements. Mr. Thomas then outlined a scheme, including a central office, whereat each of the Allies' programmes would 'be made known. He discussed the position and said that the office will centralise all matters relating to guns, munitions, and War material. THE STOCK EXCHANGE. A BUOYANT TONE. Received Nov. 28, 8 p.m. London, Nov. 27.
