THINGS THAT HAPPEN IN WAR TIME.

Captain Lance Hawker, the new aviator V.C., comes of a family whose crest is a hawk, and whose motto is: "The hawk seeks booty; we seek glory." Miss Hcrblot, daughter of Sir Cecil Hertslet, British Consul-General for Belgium, has been aeeepte'd for foreign service as a nurse, and is sailing for Malta. A British Army captain reports that the canteen has ''live times the demand for sweets than was expected, and onefifth the demand for beer/' according to the Confectioners' Union.

Nurse 01 wen Lloyd George, the eldest daughter of the Minister of Munitions, is now enjoying a rest after spending three months nursmg wounded British soldiers at the base hospital. Arrangements have been made by the authorities in Australia that presents, not exceeding £lO in value for twelve months, from Imperial Reservists who were called up from Australia for active service are to be admitted to the Commonwealth free of duty.

The Balham Piscatorial? have thrown open their private waters at Wisley, Byfleet, free to wounded soldiers; and a special outing will shortly be held at Eastbourne by the Dreadnought Sea Angling Society to catch fish for one of the military hospitals.

South Africans in London are making arrangements for the care of their'countrymen who are expected shortly to be assisting in the European war, and Lord Gladstone presided at a meeting called to establish hospital accommodation for these troops. Dr. Everett MacLaren, daughter of Mr. R. L. Everett, formerly M.P. for Woodbridge, has been appointed resident pathologist and bacteriologist at Oakbank Hospital, Glasgow, under the military authorities, with the rank of captain, and is J;he first woman doctor in Scotland to attain this rank.

The American Women's War hospital Olchvay House, Paignton, will not be closed, nor will the continuity of the work be in any way interrupted by the decision of the American Red Gross to withdraw the nursing units they have so generously supplied to all the belligerent countries since the beginning of hostilities. Alderman R. J. Carr, twice Mayor of Morpeth, and a schoolmaster in the borough of Wansbeck, has spent the month of his school vacation by working a month of shifts, seven days a week, at Elswick, where he has been engaged in the lacquering department. Thurgar lias al?o filled the position of captain of the Norfolk County Football Club, playing in the position of goalkeeper. At a cricket match at Hornsey the other week a race was arranged for a number of wounded soldiers who were present, when a collection was made among the onlookers to provide the prizes. A gentleman placed in the hat a valuable diamond pin which he took from his tie. Tiiis was awarded to the the winner, Lance-Corporal Ainsworth.
