A little while ago a lady went into a shop in Bray, Ireland, and bought a pound of butter. On taking it home and cutting' it, her knife came upon something hard. On examination, this "foreign substance" proved to be a small glass phial, in which was inserted a letter. I will esteem it a great favor if you will reply to this, and as this will reach, you somewhere about Christmas time, I will wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year." In the Christchurch Magistrate's Court on Thursday a number of consumers were charged with the theft of gas and attempting to steal from the Gas Company. It was alleged that the method employed was to break the red seal on top of the meter, unfasten the screw, set back the hands and replace the index box. The place was then filled up witli sealing wax and dust spread over the wax. The perpetrators, however, forgot to let the wax harden before covering it with dust, and in consequence marks were lett. The Magistrate entered convictions and said the frauds were very serious. He inflicted two fines of £lO and costs and a third fine of £3 and costs.
