The Rev. J. R. Shore has returned tff Hawera from Auckland, whore he lias been attending tho Presbyterian General Assembly. The Taranaki Presbytery has granted to the Rev. J. Lowcry, of EHliani, leave of absence until the end of. the year owing to ill-health. Mr. N. Porter, formerly of Stratford, in a letter to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Porter, of Stratford, states that he has joined the Flying Corps in England,
Mr. J. R. Wilson underwent a serious operation at a private hospital in New Plymouth on Thursday, and is now mak> ing satisfactory progress. Rev. A. Fowler, vicar of Remuera, and formerly in charge of Te Henui Parish, is on a visit to New' Plymouth, staying with Mr. W. Cntfield, of Fitzroy. Mr. H. B. Samuel has been appointed to the .Chancellorship of the Duehy of Lancaster, with a -seat in the Cabinet. He retains the position of Postmaster* General.
The Rev. H. J. Deane, formerly vicar of Patea, in a. private letter, states that it is his intention to return to tha Dominion in the near future.
Second-Lieutenant R, H. Quilliam, of the Ninth Reinforcements, arrived in New Plymouth last night on leave. He was accompanied by Mrs. Quilliam, A London cable saya that the Speaker, on behalf of the members of the House of Commons, presented a gold inkstand brooch to Miss Violet Asquitli, who is marrying Mr. Bowlinm Carter on Tuesday.
Sub-Inspector Fouhy returned from Auckland by the mail train after a. week's leave of absence spent in the northern city. Misseß M. Trask and L. Leary, of tits New PlymoTith Hospital, and Miss 11. Flynn, of the Hawera Hospital, Jiave been appointed to the first division of the Third Contingent of Nurses, who will leave New Zealand on the Maraiini. Sister Jeanne Sinclair, of New Plymouth, who was one of the nursei aboard the Marquette, has been admitted to the Nineteenth General Hospital, Alexandria. The nature of her illness has not yet been diagnosed. The Hon. W. D. S. Maedonald (Minister of Mines will visit the mininz districts of the South Island next week. Liteutenant T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., will escort the Minister through the areas in the Westland district, and on the trip will take leave of his constituents before going to the front. Miss Barbara S. McDiarmid, M.A., has been appointed assistant mi-tress of Otago Uirls' High Sohool, at a salary of £2OO. Miss McDiarmid is a graduate of Edinburgh University, and since February, 1914, has held a position at the. Wellington Girls' College. There were twenty-eight applications.
The New Zealand Board of Control of the Bristol and Dominion Producers' Association has appointed Mr, H. Baden Powell to tlie position of general manager. Mr. Baden Powell is at present associated with Messrs McNeil and Co., of Auckland. The appointment was necessitated by the resignation of Mr. H. G. Hill.
Reg. I. Hill, who was killed in action at the Dardanelles on August 8, was a prominent and popular member of the Okato Football Club. Though but a lad, he played a dashing and beady game lof football, and had a promising career before him. He was one of the first to volunteer, leaving with the Main Body when only nineteen years of age. News of his death was sent forward some weeks ago by one of his comrades, who assisted at his burial, but the official notification has only just been received His parents, who are old and respected residents of the Coast, will have the sympathy of all in the loss of their son, who was deservedly popular with all whom lie camo in coat tact.
