THE FLOWER SHOW.
SMALL ENTRIES RECEIVED. J'INK DISPLAY OF ROSES. The damage wrouglit in the New 'Plymoutli gardens by the recent stormy weather had the effect of considerably decreasing the number of exhibitors at the spring show held in the Good Templar Hall yesterday, under the auspices of the New Plymouth Horticultural Society. The show, therefore was on a much smaller scale than in previous years, and a great number of the classes drew no entries, while other classes did not provide much competition. There were particularly poor entries in the vegetable classes, and the judges expressed regret that there had not been more eompetitiin, but this was doubtless due to the fact that the season has been against good growth. But in spite of the climatic elements having done their best to spoil the show, the quality of the blooms shown was high, and, considering the weather, n splendid little showing of blooms was made. An excellent feature was an exhibit of roses from the garden of Mr. Stanley, Shaw, and the blooms, in great variety | of <;olor and type, were effectively arranged against a green background made up of pot plants. To see some of Mr. Shaw's roses made it difficult to believe there had been any bad weather. Mr. J. Gibson showed an interesting collection of flowering plants, rambler roses and delphinium predominating. Messrs Duncan and Davies and the Morshead Nursery Co. each had splendid exhibits containing a great variety of blooms and pot plants. The show was well patronised, and during the afternoon a number of ladies dispensed tea, the proceeds of which will go to the Belgian Fund. The prize-list is as follows:-
