STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) .Stratford, Yesterday. The executive committee of the Patriotic Committee have decided to send £4O for the comforts of the men at the front. To an enquiry ahout sending a nurse to the front the Government replied that only a duly qualified nurse would receive official recognition. Mr. J. Buchanan m'et with a painful accident yesterday. He wag driving a hull, and in trying to head the animal off the footpath his horse went through a culvert, with the result that Mr. Buchanan was thrown off and sustained a broken arm. Mrs. W. J. Newton met with an accident yesterday. She was crossing the footpath, and in getting down from the high kerb to the road slipped and fell, and she is now confined to her bed.

Mr. C. E. James has an razor case in his window that saved the life of a soldier. A piece of shrapnel struck the ease, and one lias only to look at the remains to get a faint idea of the force of the blow.

A good attendance, fine floor, and nice music, made the Associated Auctioneers' Social in the Town Hall last night a great success. The hall had been nicely decorated and just over the heads of the dancers were two rows of Chinese lanterns, lit with electricity, and with the main lights off the effect was very pretty. A fine orchestra of twelve performers was under Mr. C. H. Rogers. The supper was all that could be desired, and reflected great credit on the ladies in charge. During the evening songs were rendered by Mrs. Massey, and Messrs. Reese and Gormley (of Hawera). The secretary, Mr. F. Kane deserves credit for his hard work in carrying out such a successful function.
