THE SIXTHS.

ARRIVAL IN EGYPT. DEPARTURE FOR THE FRONT. News of the Si\'th Reinforcements is contained in a letter received by his wife at Knehu, from Private E. A. Vennell, who was a very popular Aucklaiuler, and was engaged on public works throughout New Zealand before enlisting. Writing from Zeituon camp under date of September 2.'!, Private Vennell • states that they arrived in Egypt on September 19 after a fairly good passage from New Zealand. They had been in heavy training ever since on the desert, rising for drill at 5.30 a.m. and finihing daily

at 0.30 p.m. The camp was very big, and everything kept scrupulously clean. All the Fifth mounted men, states the writer, were to leave with them for the Dardanelles on September 20, the Sixth mounted remaining behind with the horses. All were wearing knickerbockers, as they were so much cooler to march in. The weather was not so hot, as the winter season was approaching. Remarking upon the fact that there were very few New Zealandcrs left on Gallipoli, the majority being scattered about having a well-earned rest, Private Vennell said that most of the men were suffering after their long period in the trenches from dysentery and exhaustion more- than from bullet wounds. Many had come through all engagements \yithout a scratch.
