SPORTING.
.TU'RF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") •A good mimoer of Taranaki-trained horses are engaged at the Ashhurst and Takapuna meetings this week. The Ashhnrst Club, after a few seasons' spell, has again secured a totalisator permit, and judging by the liberal acceptances received'for to-day's races, sportsmen intend giving the Club a good start in its new reign. The Takapuna meeting opens to-day, and will be concluded on Saturday.
A parcel of errors crept into the telegraphed list of acceptances for Takapuna, published in Monday's "News." i-Iydrus has 7.8 not 7.0 in the Borough Handicap, and to this list should be added: Tyson 7.8, Munster 7.8, and Kauri King 7.0. Backers of Tyson may now recover their lost breath!
Ten horses have been paid up for in the St. Andrew's Handicap at Takapuna, and the issue appears to be very open. Probalily the winner will come from amongst the several likely lightweights engaged, for the handicap appears to be cast in favor of Mullingar, Goldsize and Co. A good field of sixteen is engaged in the Cheltenham Handicap, run over seven furlongs. Rewi Poto heads the list with o.2—a weight that may not trouble the black crack as much as the sharp turns will. He is not too nimble at ordinary turns, and the bends at Takapuna are vitriol! Bluestone 8.0, and Soultane 7.8, have had more experience over the course.
A smart crowd of sprinters figure in the Borough Handicap (5 1 /. furlongs). Hawera sports arc only wondering what Tyson will win by. but it should be remembered that there are as quick beginners as Tyson in the race, and Kitty ■Bellairs, King Lupin, and Glenroy are all pretty quick off the mark. King Lupin and Kitty Bellairs will carry most of the Auckland money, and on paper it looks as if they will carry it well. An interesting feature of' the Cambria Handicap (four furlongs), will be the meeting between' Hyllns and Lady Elysian. The former is not reliable at the barrier, but can travel fast on the journey. Lady Elysian is synonymous with consistency, and she seems likely to give her backers a good run. Black Northern has a great load (13st) in the Tirl Hurdles, and he is too fond of running off to take the public taste. Xgapoto lO.i and Master Regel 10.0 are likely to have more supporters.
A fair team of Hawera horses were railed 'through to Ashhurst early this week. They are (fairly fit, and should bring back some of the money White Plume, who made a bold shewing at Waverley, is likely to carry a lot of money in the Hack Hurdles.
Lady Middleton is in fine condition to contest the Pohangiua Handicap (sixfurlongs), but Powder Fox and Tangiwai have a big pull in the weights. Coropet appears to he very well treated in the Flying Handicap (five furlongs), and Vladincau and Papauira also have recent form to recommend them. Maniaroa is given a rare chance to distinguish himself in the Ashhurst Cup., in which Square Deal'appears to be tlie only really dangerous one.
Roumania failed at Riccarton, but will be up against softer company in the Koinako Handicap (seven furlongs).
A very moderate lot will contest the Maiden (five furlongs) If the imported Kaiserine is ever going to win a race, she is hereby invited to single herself out.
Probably scratchings will upset the field in the Raumai Handicap, but if Lady Middleton, Orleans, or Combustion go to the post they will not want for backers.
The curtain will be rung down on the Gorge Handicap, in which Coropct and Vladineau mav give the others their fill!
There is a horse named Boggitts runnings at Takapuna to-day, 1 Boggitts may stand for something classic, but it is hardly a graceful cognomen.
