"ENCUMBRANCES."
To the Editor. Sir, —In your paper at the present time there is a good deal of corresponded on '"Shirkers," "Rum," "Carnivals," etc. Someone writing the other day mentioned the new marriage laws of Germany to repair the wastage of war. Isn't it nearly time the Government here did the same? Nearly every day you can see in the leading Wellington and Hawke's Bay papers the following patriotic advertisement: "Wanted, married couple, without encumbrance." The big man in the squatting centres of the Dominion has for a good many years discouraged encumbrances, yet I should say it's nearly time that he woke up to the fact that they are very handy things to have about the premises, and it seems the only way to wake him is with legislation, say capital punishment for the advertiser, and ten years for the editor who inserts such advertisement.— I am, etc.. RENOWy. Rahotu, November 18.
