BOWLING.
WEST END RETAINS THE BANNJSR. The first match of the season for the much coveted banner took place yesterday on (lie West End Green when Stratford essayed the task of wresting the trojihy from last year's champion, but signally failed "in the attempt, gaining only the major points in one rink out of four, and being defeated in the aggregate by !)2 to 02. The weather could not have been better for bowls, and the greatest praise is due to the West End Club for bringing their green to such an excellent condition for enjoyable play. The visitors were entertained to afternoon tea, provided by the ladies, and at the close of the game mutual courtesies were exchanged by the two clubs and cheers were given by each for the other. Allowing for the holders of the banner having the advantage of playing on their own green, they were undoubtedly the superior team, though Sangster put up a good score against Lobb, but none of the other visiting skip's could make headway against the West End topnoteliera. It will have to be a first rate combination that will annex the banner this year, judging by yesterday's play, the details of the scores of which are as follow, Stratford players being mentioned first in each rink: — Lopdcll, F. J. McDonald, W. McDonald, Sangster (s) 21, v. Bartlett, T. Sole, F. J. Hill, Lobb (s) 13. North, Edgcombe, Morison, Nicholson (s) 12, v. Honeyfield, Johnson, Curtis, Solo (s) 29. Jackson, Fookes, Smart, Sharpe (sS H, v. W. Putt, V. A. Leo, .). Wood, F. Xewell (s) 25. Martin, Masters, Collier, McMillan (s) 1.3, v. Lye, Petty, Oliver, Boa! (s) 25. Before leaving for home the visitors gave three hearty cheers for the ladies.
