INFANTRY NEEDED.
SURPLUS IN AMBULANCE. Recruits for tlie expeditionary forces have f.hown a .marked tendency to crowd into special branches, notably the Ambulance and tins Army Service Corps, to tlie neglect of the infantry and mounted rifles branches (says the Wellington Times). Consequently there are long lists of men waiting for their turn to begin training for the special branches, while the authorities have to make special appeals for infantry recruits. Enough men are in lianil for months to come as far as the Ambulance and Army Service Corps are concerned, and the same applies in a lesser degree to the artillery and minor branches. The Defence Minister stated that it had been decided to suspend recruiting for tlie Ambulance and Anny Service Corps, and possibly for some other branches. Additional men were riot required for those units at the present time, and the stream of recruits could be more profitably used iu the Infantry and mounted riflta.
