CARNIVAL QUEENS. (To the Editor). Sir,—Unlike "Civis,". I admire Rev. A. H. Colvile for his courageous oondenma tion of carnival queens. I'm no Puritan, and no consistent clmrcli-goer, but more a man of the world They serve their purpose of extracting money from many who cannot be 'got at" otherwise. But there is a danger, and a real danger, to (he girls that associate themselves with the carnivals. I am not thinking so much of the queen candidates as the girls canvassing on their behalf. The latter become affected by the ej'aze, and [often go further than circumspection and modesty and purity in endeavouring to sell tickets. What I mean is that they lose their guard, and there are any number of human vampires only too ready to take advantage of the opening. Indeed, it is a known fact that there are numbers of this unscrupulous type haunting the streets of Auckland at' the present time: Ordinarily, the natural reserve of young girls'in sufficient protection from this undesirable class, but in their zeal to dispose- of tickets, the girls throw this reserve to the winds, and allow these blackguards a footing which may lead to disastrous results. 1 know it has in certain specific instances, and for that reason, I commend Mr. Colvile for his timely warning and protest. It is certainly the duty of clergymen to warn the community against hidden moral dangers, and I'm glad that New Plymouth possesess one who is not afraid to hit out and speak the truth.—l am, etc., SLACK CHURCHMAN. New Plymouth, Nov. 13.
