TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") Concluding day at Riccarton. Marlborough races on Wednesday. Feilding weights arc due on Tuesday. Desert Gold will be a warm order in the Stead Cup. W. Mantle has a couple of horses engaged at Marlborough next w?ek. ' On the New Zealand Cup the totalisator handled £ 10,443 10s—a record for one race at Riccarton. Aruake cost his party some money on Saturday, but they may get it back with interest very soon. Tangihou is the first aged horse to] win the New Zealand Cup since Tortulla scored away back in 1901. Egypt has raced consistently right through the Canterbury meeting, and a win in the Pioneer Handicap would be well deserved. Three is a great beginner, and made most of the pace in the Stewards' Handicap. 'The imported numeral should be well back in the Electric Plate (four furlongs). The dividends returned by Desert Cold and Warstep on Wednesday were very small, but they wore as nearly "morals" as racing can supply. Welcome Nugget wa« not allowed to pay a very fat price in the Otaio Plate, but the stake was worth -210 sovs. to the Hawora horse! "Wager" (Stratford): The Canterbury Trotting Club's rule reads:—''Horses trained in the same stable, and running in the same race will be coupled on the totalisator." The Wanganui Racing Club has just about completed improvements to their track. In addition to top-dressing, the bends have been "saueeriscd," so that the track should be much safer in future. Ngapoto should have won the Maiden Hurdles at Ellerslic. lie was bowling along in great style when he overjumped, slipped and "nosed'' the ground. Before he could recover Master Kegel had snatched a lucky victory. Two ancient champions, Kiatere and Sol. were paraded in the paddock and birdcage at the Auckland spring meeting. Their covers bore patriotic appeals, and the old 'chasers netted a fair amount for the boys at the front. A couple of days prior .to tne New Zealand Cup, John Barleycorn looked fit enough to race for a kingdom but the next day he went sore and had to be withdrawn from the big race. Rewi Poto was too well looked after at EUerslie to have a chance of winning, and his best effort was a close fourth in the Epsoin Handicap, won bv GoMfire. Astor was ridden by L Noddcr at Ellerslic, hut each start had to put up with second money. The gelding won £IOO in stakes, and his party lost nothing by backing him each day. Amongst the horses entered for the Ashhurst meeting are: Avon Parle, Lady Middleton, Tangiwai, Coropet, Maniaroa, Wild Lupin, Glacier, Florist and Zefes. The Cup winner, Tangihou, is eight years old, probably the oldest hor.-e that has won the race. As a yearling he was sold to the late J. R. McDonald for SOgns. . Where is all the money coming from to swell the totalisator record* at the Canterbury meeting? After th<> first day's gruelling, when not a first favorite finished in a place, one would imiginc that the punter* would be ju.t about "stony." Soon after reaching the straight in the New Zealand Cup, Midnight Star broke down. He was prominently at the time, and appeared to have as much chance as anything else. Ronmania is a horse worth keeping in mind. It may be to-day. or at the North Island meeting towards the end of tile month. Welcome Nugget reads fairly well in the Fcndalton Handicap to-day. and will probably have a big Taranaki following. Eligible, on the same mark, may p>'ovc a tough nut to crack, however. When Golborne led the field home in the Onehunga Steeplechase the other day, his owner, Mr. A. X. Dingle, very generously donated the amount of the stakes, t'225, to the patriotic funds. Next year the Westland Racing Club will celebrate its jubilee. Several thousand pounds has been spent nn improvements, and a special jubilee programme has been mapped out (.'onirrntuliitimis! Sweet Tipperaiy, winner of the Welcome Stakes, cost her minors fifty guineas. She is a black filly by King's Guest—Golden Ball, and truces back to the same family as Gaulus and Grafter, both Melbourne Cup winners. When the Allies got into Germany there will be some jawbreakers! At the Bendigo Show a lady rode Snowflake over oft Tin, which is an Australian high jump record for a horse ridden by one of the unfair sex. An amateur in Mr. W. Parkinson is riding with remarkable success in Ireland this year. He rides against the professionals, and up to September oth had won 55 of the 1.11 races in which be has figured this season. The previous greatest number of winners ridden in Ireland in one season was "ill, by John Thompson in 1007. At a recent meeting at Water ford, Mr. Parkinson rode live winners during the afternoon, and runners were fairly numerous for each race. His winning percentage of 4l.ftS is -,i remarkable one. and it is safe to 'say that the hoisting of bis name as its rider affects the price of any horse at a meeting in Ivslwiii
