A SEAMAN HERO. OTKTS FOR THE SHIP. li.v Telegraph.—Press Association. • Wellington, Last Night. '' 'la connection with the recent opera* lions conducted by members of the crew. of H.M.S. Philomel, in conjunction with land forees, the Defence Minister has. been advised that l.ieut. Fitzadani Millar. R.X.. who was in charge of the detachment, displayed much zeal and ability, and carried out a retirement under very difficult conditions with untiring energy and devotion to duty. This. was the second time Lieut. Millar had directed a- diilioult retirement. Mention is made also of the services of Bruce Sydney Bagley, A.8., who has. since died. Bagley, when in a very distressed condition, gave up his opportunity of riding on a mule in favor of another man, and lie himself continued to walk on until lie dropped and died in hia tracks. liagley had previously distinguished himself. In a letter to the Defence Minister, dated October 1, Captain Hall-Thompson states that half a ton of butter that was reoieved from New Zealand had lasted two months, and was then just about finished. Sheops' tongues sent from the Dominion were also nearly gone. The captains mentions that the supplies had been '"a great joy in these places, where such things are quite unprocurable."
The butter was presented by firms in the Auckland district, and the tongues were a gift from the Wellington Meat Export Company. Another half-ton of butter, donated by Auckland people, is now on its way In the ship and other supplies, including fruit and tinned vegetables, are being collected in New Zealand for despatch to the Philomel.
