NORMANBY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Normanby, Yesterday. PRESENTATION. The territorials and cadets last night tendered a farewell supper to Private David Frei, who leaves for Trentham on 'Monday evening to join the Tenth [Reinforcements. During- the evening a [pianoforte solo was given by Miss Alma Sawerby and a vocal solo by Miss Butller. The Rev. J. 'W. Butler expressed his pleasure at being present to do honor to another Normanby lad who had Altered himself for King and Empire, lie said lie 'believed that conscription would come in the Dominion Within the next six months, and those who were voluntarily offering their services now were deserving of special honor.
Mr. Butler then presented the soldier with a khaki Testament, a gift from the local Presbyterian Church. Mr. Colin Rich, in a litting speech, made a presentation of a ''combination protector," on behalf of the territorials and cadets, and said that Private Frci's example would be followed by many more from this district. Other toasts were ''The Allies" and "The Ladies," the latter being responded to by a lady who said that she was glad to know that Private Frei was going to the front, and she was quite willing to do her share of the milking so that he might be free to serve his country. A very pleasant evening was brought to a close by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and cheers for the guest. A citizens' farewell will be tendered to Private Frei when he returns for his final leave. Messrs ,S. Craig, E. Hurleman, and ,David Frei leave for Trentham on Monday evening, making a total of 54 from Xormauby who have enlisted. The severe storm was felt here last evening, when heavy rain, accompanied by loud thunder and vivid Hashes of lightning passed over the town about 9.30. Very Jittle damage is reported. Mr. Carman, of Okaiawa, and others left by the mail train for Wellington this morning in order to be present at the final leave-taking of the boys of the Eighth Reinforcements. Owing to the severe weather during the past four weeks the returns at the local dairy factory have shown a slight drop. The season, however, promises to lie a record on«.
