CHEESE FOR THE ARMY
THE MATTER OF PRICE. At the conference of representatives of the cheese-making industry in Wellington on Tuesday, Messrs Marx and Murdoch represented the Taranaki factories, Mr. Murdoch writes to say that the report of eeitain remarks ascribed to the Premier is somewhat misleading. The Premier is reported as having said: "Just at present cheese is selling at a higher price than that offered by the Imperial Government, but they arc prepared to forego the difference, and to do what they believe to be their duty under the present circumstances."
With reference to this Mr. Murdoch states: ''The [nice offered or determined by the authorities for our cheese )vas not discussed by the representatives present; only the conditions pertaining to supplying, delivering, branding, etc., were discussed, The representatives assured the Premiev that they would give every assistance to the Department to facilitate carrying out the conditions as set out. The Premier during the conversation informed those present that in this, as in other cases where commodities -were commandeered bv the Imperial authorities, those supplying have the right of appeal in the matter of prices. It is hardly likely, in the face of the cheese meetings held at Hawera and elsewhere, that the 7%d will be objected to. Those present were not in a position to give the emphatic assurance which the report conveys."— Hawera Star.
