Mr. Herdman is ''tipped" as the act-ing-Prime Minister during Mr. Massev'i visit to the Old Country. Mr. B. Dive, Mayor of Eltham, is, says the Star's correspondent, confined to his room through a severe attack of influenza.
Lieut.-Colonel J. E. Hume, R.N.Z.A., officer commanding the Auckland military district, has been granted the temporary rank of colonel while in command of a military district. Dr. W. H. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, had (says the Star) sufficiently recovered from his recent serious illness to appear on Wednesday in Queen Street, where he received wanu greetings from many friends.' A private message was received yesterday (reports the Star) stating that Mr. Thomas Barmby, formerly a well-known business and public man in Hawera, died on Wednesday night. Many friends in Hawera will"hear the news with sincere regret. Mr. Charles Schubert, an old resident of Akaroa, has just died, aged SO years. He was one of the hardy band of'goldseekers who tried their luck on Australian and New Zealand fields. He went to reside at Akaroa about 35 years ago. Amongst others, Sergeants T. Y. Seddon and W. Downie Stewart, the two M's.P., who have been in, training for the past four months with the Bth Reinforcements, have qualified by examination for appointment to commissions. They will probably be posted shortly.
Letters received from Trooper Jas. Catchpole state that lie in still in the Malta Hospital. He was then getting on as well as could be expected. His brother Alfred was unfortunatelv one of those posted as missing on -August 2f>. Out of his company of Wellington Mounted* only three were uinvounded after the »rent engagement on that day. \ cry few of the men who were posted us missing had been iraced. Trooper Catchpole says that it was impossible to go out and search for bodies owing to the vigilance of the enemy. It was generally understood that the body of Colonel Malone had been recovered] but very few others. Trooper TCric Catclipole feit on the same day as the gallant Colonel, —Star.
Lieut.-Colonel Findlay, mentioned in despatches and made 0.8. for services in Oallipoli, is an ex-Otago resident, son of the late Charles Findlay, of Romtiey Marsh Farm, North Taieri. His mother and sister are still residing in Dunodin. Colonel Findlay was tin enthusiastie member of the Otago Hussars, and giin. Ed his first war experience in South Africa, where he saw about two years' active service. lie was lieutenant of the Second South African Contingent, was promoted captain, and later joined the Sixth Contingent as acting-major, wnicli position he retained until he was wounded, Upon returning to Xew Zealand Major Findfay started farming operations near Otautau, Southland, but shifted a few years ago to Ashburton district. He was lieut.-colonel in conmund of the Canterbury Mount-d. TTc was severely wounded during Die .. alUck in Auguit.
