TROUBLE IN THE STOKEHOLD.
AX UNUSUAL INCIDENT. Wellington, Yesterday. A most unusual incident occurred in Connection with the crew of the steamer Pateena at Wellington yesterday. For some time past she lias been unable to procure a. stokehold crew on account of the men insisting that nine firemen and three greasers should he employed below, instead of her ordinary complement of six firemen, three trimmers, and three greasers. To this arrangement the Union Company refused to agree, and consequently it was decided to lay the vessel up indefinitely. Yesterday, however, members of the Seamen's Union approached the superintendent engineer of the company and offered to sign on the Pateena on tlie old manning scale. This request was acceded to, and the Pateena left at 0 p.m. yesterday for Nelson direct, in place of the Mapourika. It is understood that the latter vessel will remain here till Friday next, when she will relieve the Pateena iu the Welling--ton-Picton-Nelson service. The Pateena will, it is stated, take the place of tlie Maori for a trip or two on the ferry run whilst the latter vessel is being docked for overhaul
