NEW WHITS STAR LINERS. fThe amount of work being done oti merchant vessels is growing lcs,, although some progress has been made at lla>rland and Wolff's yard with the plating to a Scotch Shire liner of the Carmarthenshire typo, and a Bibby liner, states the Belfast correspondent of the London Shipping Cr.zetts in a recent issue. THE DISCOVERY. The ship Discovery, which is well lmown in New Zealand, having carried Captain Scott and his companions to the Southern Seas on their hist expedition, is now in Manchester. The sails have been taken oil' her, the masts shortened, and left without yards, and the bowsprit and jib-boom have been unshipped. She is no longer a sailing vessel, but a steamship. She may be slow, but alio will 'be short and safe, for her timbers arc a stride in thickness. Since her Antr.rctic voyage she has traded to Hudson Bay and New York from London and other places, but she is now to keep up a service between Manchester, Nantes and Bordeaux. NEW C. AND D. LINERS BUILDING. Latest Australian files state that although no definite news has been received as to vfhen they will be delivered, information has reached Sydney,to the effect that the fleet ol Commonwealth and Dominion Line is to l>e augmented in the near future by the addition of four more first-ela&s cargo-carriers. The advices to hand state that two of the vessels are already partially constructed and the keels of the other two a.r® to he laid as soon ar, circumstances in the United Kingdom will permit. The vessels are to be of the Muritai class, but larger, and will, of course, bo adapted for the cargo of refrigerator, well as general cargo, and built to meet the requirements of the United Kingdom-Aus-tralian-New Zealand trade. Special attention has been devoted to the in,"-tier of speed in tile quj.rtot. From what can be gleaned so far, the vessels will be able to steam about 1-1 knots per hour when fully iaden on a iow coal consumption. It is understood that Tomoana has been selected as the name for the first one launched, but no definite decision as regards names haj been arrived at in connection with the other:.
