NORMANBY.
SCHOOL COMMITTEE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Friday evening. Present; Messrs. S. Richards (chairman), A. Anneson, W. Pollock, W. Moore Hamilton and T. Dee (secretary). Correspondence was received from the Education Board stating that it could not comply with the committee's request for the ■ erection of new outhouses, the Board's foreman having reported that this was not necessary. The chairman stated that the Town Board were not likely to take any further action with reference to the pit, which had. been condemned by the Town Board's sanitary Inspector. The secretary reported having communicated the Town Board's decision to the Education Board. Some discussion took place with reference to the visit of the Hon. ,1. A. Hanan, Minister for Education, to several of the schools in the district, and several of the members expressed surprise that those responsible for the arrangements did not get the, Minister to visit Normanby and see the wretched condition of the school buildings. Mr. Moore thought that the Committee should again approach the Board for a new school, for there was a possibility that the matter would be overlooked. The secretary was of the opinion that the Board would not erect a new school owing to the financial position caused by the war. The Board had promised a new building, but it was not likely that anything would be done at present. The Education Board had to economise as much us possible at the present time. It was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Moore, that the school be closed for the People's Day in connection with the Hawera Show. Messrs. W. Moore and A. Annenson were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. It was resolved to issue collecting lists for I the school picnic and prize fund, and j that the prize list be curtailed this year j in view of the many calls upon the parents, occasioned by the war.
GENERAL. It is reported that at the request of the Maoris, the Minister for Native Affairs has approved of the Native Land Court being removed from Hawera to Normanby. This will mean increased business for the tradespeople here. It is expected that the meetings of the Land Court will be held in the Town Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Bowman celebrated their golden wedding with a family reunion last week.
