MISHAP TO MAPOURIKA.
STRIKES NEAR FRENCH PASS. VESSEL LITTLE DAMAGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Nov. 0. Advice has been received from Nelson which states that the Mapourika struck (.'lay Point during the night on the trip from Wellington to Nelson. It was a dark, wet night, with heavy thunder and lightning. The vessel listed aftor twenty minutes. The passengers behaved splendidly. Nelson, Nov. 6. The Mapourika struck on Clay Point, near the French Pass, early this morning, during an electric storm. The wells ivere sounded and the boats .swung out and lifebelts issued in preparation for the worst. The soundings allayed anxiety as the steamer was making but little water. After ■leven minutes she came oil' the rocks and proceeded to Nelson, where she was inspected on ,arrival. Some plates in the bow were found to be slightly started, but the injury was so slight that the vessel was allowed to sail for Wellington, leaving at 10 o'clock. A preliminary inquiry was held before the Collector of Customs, and the evidence will be forwarded to Wellington.
