The Hon. J. A. Hanan is expected t» arrive at New Plymouth on Wednesday. The many friends of Mr. Jacob Marx, of Mangatoki, will regret to hear that he is seriously indisposed, and that 1)9 has found it necessary to take a rest.
Mr. C. Smith, of Palmerston North, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, is about to take a trip to the Old Country for the benefit of his; health.
Chaplain-Captain Hoare has been transferred from Avondale military camp to Tauherinikau military camp, Chaplain-Captain Gray, of Tauherinikau camp, goes to Avondale. Mr. E. Griffiths, of New Plymouth, has received advice that his brother, Major G. C. Griffiths, has returned to the Dardanelles from Egypt. Another brother, Lieut. O. Griffiths, leaves with the Eighth Reinforcements. Lieutenant-Colonel A. E. Loach (Canterbury Infantry Battalion), who was wounded at Gallipoli, and invalided to England, was a passenger by the Mongolia, which arrived at Melbourne from London this week.
Mr. L. F. B. Smith, of Wanganui, who was sheep-farming in the Whangamomona district, and who recently went to England, has joined Lord l.ovat's Scouts, and is proceeding to the Dardanelles.
Flight-Lieutenant Clive Collett, of the Royal Flying Corps, has made several flights in England, in France and across the English Channel. This young officer is a son of the late Mr. Coliett. ftovern. ment stock inspector, of Tauranga. Captain Finn, who was reported recently as having received the D.5.0.. is a native of Invercargill, a 6on of Mr. Terence P. Finn ) solicitor. He gave up a lucrative business as dentist at Auckland to enlist. >
Constable M. Kyne, of the Hawera police forte, was among the successful candidates who passed for the rank of sergeant in the recruit police laminations. Sergeant Wade, of Wellington, formerly of Eltham, also qualified for the. rank of senior sergeant. A Wanganui telegram states that Waata Wiremu Hinungo, a well-known Maori chief, passed away on Saturday night, after a short illness, at the age of u'2 years. Deceased a short time ago presented Hipango Park to the town of Wanganui, and took a keen interest in the welfare of the district.
Mr. E. I-lonore, who recently resigned from t.lio stall' of the Manilla'po*t office in order to devote the whole of Ilia time to apiary and poultry farming, was on the occasion of severing his connection with the ofliee, made the recipient of a gold-mounted fountain pen, suitably inscribed by the member's of (he staff. The postmaster (Mr. Ooodgcr) who made the presentation, spoke" in terms highly complimentary to Mr. Honore a& an ollicial.
Dr. A. \Y. Averill, Anglican Bishop of Auckland, will leave Auckland next week on a visit to Otorohangn, Te Kuiti, Tauinui'iiimi, and Ohura. where he will' open a new church. He will afterwards travel down ihe Waiiganui River to Wanganui, and then visit New Plymouth, where on Sunday, November 28, he will consecrate the transept and side chapel, which has been added to St. Mary's church as a memorial to the late Archdeacon Govett.
Mr. Joseph Nathan, .T.P., district coroner and registrar of electors for Ohinemini, dropped dead on Thursday morning at his residence. A messenger went to deliver a telegram to him asking him to preside at an inquest in Te Aroha. Mr, Nathan opened the door, complained of pain in the heart, fell, and expired immediately.
