ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A MOTOR FATALITY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Nov. C. George Burness, aged 32, a single man, was run into by a motor-car last night at 7 o'clock. He was removed to the hospital for an operation and died this morning. \ Burness suffered from deafness and stepped in front as the car was passing at a moderate speed.
KILLED BY A DERRICK. Te Aroha, Thursday. A young man named William Bren'nan wag killed at Te Aroha this morning. He was engaged in hoisting goods from the wharf on to one of the Northern Steamship Company's boats, when the rope broke, the derrick striking him on the head. Death was instantaneous. Deceased leaves a widow and one child.
MAORI BOY SHOT. Taumamnui, Thursday. A native lad, Ponga Tapitahi, aged about twelve, was accidentally shot by his brother-in-law, named Koraka, while rabbit shooting at Waimiha, near Tanmarunui, on Tuesday. The evidence at an inquest held by Mr. A. Laird, actingcoroner, showed that the two were walk ing single file along a track, when the boy, who was in front, ducked under a manuka branch across the path. Koraka, who was carrying a double-barrelled shotgun, with the hammers down, lifted the branch,, throwing it behind him. The branch caught the hammers, causing one of the cartridges to explode. Ponga was shot under the left shoulder blade, and killed instantaneously. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
OPUNAKE BOY'S DEATH. RUN OVER BY "A LORRY. An accident which terminated fatally occurred on the Omata Hill on Saturday afternoon, by which Cyril Albert Million, the seven-year-old son of Mr. 0. A. Million, of Opnnake, lost his life. Mr. Million left New' Plymouth at one o'clock on Saturday afternoon, driving a motor lorry, and iie was accompanied by his son. When proceeding up the Omata Hill the engine of the lorry jambed and the vehicle stopped on the hill. The hoy got off the lorry and his father told him to keep clear of the vehicle. Presently Mr. Million started the engine again, and the lorry ran back, and just then Mr. Million heard his son cry out. "Dad, I am hurt." Mr. Mullon stopped the lorry and, alighting, he ran to the side, and found his son lying on the road clear of the vehicle. The boy said his leg was broken, and it appeared that the lorry had passed over his legs and'over one arm. The injured lad was placed in the lorry and brought to the New Plymouth Hospital, but, in spite of every attention, the boy gradually sank, and died I about eleven o'clock yesterday morning, An inquest will be held to-day.
