DISTRICT NEWS.
WAITARA. (From Our Own Correspondents.) Waitara, Nov. />. The committee in connection witb the Surf Bathing and Seaside Improvement Society met last evening. It was decided to hold the annua] general meeting on Thursday evening, 18th inst., ill the Borough Council Office, and it is hoped there will Ibe a full attendance of members.
The piles which have kept work in connection with the wharf at a standstill for some time are now to hand, and the work is now proceeding. Judging by large clips which are arriving here there should be a busy wool season this year. Arrangements in connection with the Red Cross Mart, which is being opened to-morrow (Saturday), are well in hand, and the building has been thoroughly overhauled and suits the purpose admirably, It is hoped the hard-working committee will be fully recompensed for their untiring efforts to make the market a success.
OPUNAKK. Opunake, Friday. The Bowling Season commenced here on Wednesday. The local green was in ?ood order and visitors were present from New Plymouth, Hawcra, Manaia, Auroa and Pihama. Mr. C. Sorensen (president) welcomed the visitors, and extended a hearty greeting to the public. He asked all to sipg the National Anthem, which was done, and the players bowed their heads in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to the fallen soldiers. Mrs. Sorensen then threw the jack and the usual president. v. vice-president games wer? played. Rain set in during the afternoon, but was not sufficiently heavy to prevent the games being concluded. Mr. Paterson (Manaia) returned thanks on behalf of the visitors for the afternoon's pleasure. Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies, and hearty cheers were extended to them at the conclusion of the play.
The amount banked Iby the Patriotic League to the credit of the Wounded Soldiers' (Fund ia £650. This includes £IOO from Oaonui, and £l2) odd frrom Te Kiri Oddfellows' social. Pihamahas a separate fund of over £4OO. The amount cleared from the carnival was £474. The Ladies' Guild of the Patriotic League has collected a good deal of raiment, for the Belgians and wounded soldiers.
The Red Cross canvass was not very well organised outside Opunake. So far the Egmont County has not done its full share. Opunake collected £44, but the rest of the district is untouch kl. Manaia col'ected over ,£ lfX), and the Waimate district close on £4OO.
'Mr. Strang, solicitor, in charge of Mr. Gow's Opunake branch, has decided to leave Opunake for Waipawa (H. 8.). Mr Ching has arrived to take control of the local branch.
At S.M. Court to-day an interesting case was commenced before Mr Crooke S.M., A. T. Marshall (share milker) sued D. McGregor, farmer, Te Kiri, for £ls 13s 4d, amount deducted by McGvego? from Marshall's Bhare of bonus for work not performed and for butter made by plaintiff from defendant's milk. IVJr. G'.Dea for plaintiff contended that defendant had no legal right to make the deductions and should have set up a cross action for the amount of butter alleged to'have been made, 280 pounds. Notice should have been given of the counter claim and he objected to the cross examination on the question of butter. Mr. Marshall contended that he had the right to make these deductions as it was the customary arrangement. with sharemilkers, IH is Wiroh'p upheld Mr O'Dea's objection, and the ease broke down. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount claimed and court costs, and £1 6s solicitor's fee. Defendant's solicitor intimated that be would take fresh proceedings, which his Worship and Mr. G'Dea agreed to as the proper course. The case J. K. Law v. W. Graham, partly heard at last court day, was firtlior adjourned on the application of Mr Brodie fWanganui) solicitor for the plaintiff. His Worship suggested that, it would be convenient for all p.i!t : e3 to have the case concluded at New Plymouth. Mr. Gow (for defendant) agreed if it was convenient for witnesses. HARBOUR BOARD. The Harbour Board's meeting was held to-day, when Messrs. Hughson (chairman) Lornbie, Macfle, .Malcolm, and Moore were present. Mr. McKeown wrote declining to withdraw his resignation, which was accepted with regret, and Mr Lornbie as asked to fill the vacancy. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote asking the reason for not granting a lease of section 46 to Mr. MaoReynolds, and subsequently granting a lease of same section to the Parmerrs' Co-operative Society. The Board replied that there was some misunderstanding, as Mr Macßeynolds sold his lease to the Farmers' Cooperative Society for which a lease was legally executed.
A long discussion took place on Mr. Lornbie's motion that no further action be taken in regard to the loan until t.be war ia ended.
The motion was lost on the casting vote of the chairman.
