TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa,")
New Zealand Cup day! And for the second year in time of war. But in these strenuous times racing for patriotic purposes requires no apology. All profits gp to swell the war funds so urgently needed, and considerable money ■is secured which would not be gathered in by other means. The many good sports who are playing foT bigger stakes at Gallipoli, Salonika, and other places deserve all the" monetary help that sportsmen at home can give them. It is to be hoped that fine weather favors the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting, which takes place to-day and on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday of next week.
The' thirteen paid up for in to-day's New Zealand Cup are hardly up to the usual standard. . In fact, hardly half-a-dozen have anything to recommend them for a two miles journey. Bpnny Helen, John (Barleycorn, Palisade, and Maniaroa dropped out on Wednesday night, but they had little chance anyhow. Warstep and Snub, the bracketed pair, have been doing such' excellent work that they are bound to carry most money today. The mare has 9.5, a weight that may stop her il' the track is at all holding, and her three-year-old stablemate's chance looks very much brighter. However, if both start they will be bracketed, and their backers promise to get a good run for their money. Outside Mr. C. G. Dalgety's favorite pair, Rinaldo and Tndigo appear to be the only dangerous ones, judging by past performances. There is a big proportion of "rubbish" engaged, and some owners 1 • yi more money than sense. Still, Star Rose won it once—and he was the roughest of the rough! The following horses and riders are expected to line up for the New Zealand Cup to-day:—Warstep (F. E. Jones), Sinapis (A. Olliver), Rinaldo (C. Price), Indigo (L. Wilson). Multiply (B. Deeley), Goldstream (M. McDonald), Blackall (C. Emerson), Specialform (J. O'Shea), Snub (H. Young), Tangihou (G. Clarke), Midnight Star (Roy Reed), Marc Antony (F. Gray), and Ardenvhor (Robt. Reed). The Stewards' Handicap has closed with a fine final payment of twenty-five, those which dropped out being Desert Gold, Hoy, Downliam, Nones, Encore, Red Charm, Botanist, Ardent, Probation, and Pariform. There are some fine sprinters engaged, and Croesus, Tatterley, First Glance, Bee, Tete-a-tete, Tree Lucerne, Flying Start, Chakwana, Taringamutu, and others can all travel fast. Track form points to First Glance, Flying Start, and Tctc-a-tete as horses likely to run prominently. It is very open.
The minor events at Riccafton have all drawn good fields. Aruake and Jlau.should ..run nicely in the Spring -Hurdles'; Seadown and Dribble in the Spring Plate; Battle Eve and Montana in the Riccartou Welter; Egypt and llvttus in the Welcome Stakes; and Moutoa Queen and Pyjama in the Lihwood HandicaD.
Bad weather upset calculations at lillersiie on Wednesday, and Taranaki horses were beaten all along the line, the best they could do being to gain mi, or place money (by Astor and fllenroy) in the Shorts Handicap. Expedition and Crawford may retrieve our fortunes to-day, but the others' chances do not dazzle.
Ki Gallo, Black Northern, Lady Klysian, and Hydrus appear to bo fairly well treated in their engagements at Kllerslie.
The New Zealand Cup has never been won with more than Bst. 01b. Those who reckon Warstep is a moral with 9st !)lb are taking on a big order. Last year the mare only had 7.11, and Indigo 1i.12. Warstep goes up 22lbs to-day. The New Zealand Derby Stakes will be run on Monday. With Desert Gold, Snub, and Nones engaged a fine race should result.
Taringamutu, as the result of her victory in the Pearce Handicap, will be required to put up 101 bs extra in the Stewards' Handicap. She will require to be better than most people think to win with 7.8.
Patrobas, winner of the V.K.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup, was little fancied for the Cup prior to the Derby, but his brilliant victory on Saturday must have caused a revelation in his favor for the big handicap. This season lie won the Caulficld Guineas rather easily, but was beaten in the Caulfield Cup. The critics did not consider he could stay, but Fleinington form shows him to be one of the best over a distance of ground. The following are the probable riders in the Stewards' Handicap to-day: IroesuafA. Olliver), Tatterley (L. Wilson), First Glance (A. Wormald), Bee (B. Deeley), Tete-a-tete (J. O'Shea), Tree Lucerne (0, MeCarten), Flying Start. (F. E. Jones), Chakwana (A. Ueed), Bertrada (W. Bell), Belasco (M. McDonald), Three (C. Emerson), Daytime (J. Campbell), Fabrikoff (G. Clarke), Taringamutu (E. Manson), Master Achillea (C. Carmont), Peronilla (D. Anderson), Derby Day (S. Gibb), Hushabye (H. Watson), Recorder (K. Brooks), ancl Week End (C. Sinclair),
