Harrap's have just published a timely book at three-and-six on "Serbia:" Her People, History and Aspirations." The book is chiefly valuable for its second part, in. that it deals with the national beliefs and customs of the country. It shows us the Serbian peasant in his own village, half democrat and half patriarch. In his life the superstitions of the days of Canute still hold a lively and abiding place. The war, in its course, is bringing into prominence all sorts of by-ways of the world. The consequence is that books which have for their setting places thus brought into the limelight, are enjoying a prolonged Indian summer in their career. One of the most readable books thus restored to further usefulness is "The Coil of the Carne," by Jolin Oxenham (per A. S. Brooker), published at la 3d. It is of particular interest to New Zealanders, as it introduces many scenes in' the Dardanelles and the Gallipoli Peninsula. The land problem, and the evil effects of the system pertaining in England today, have provided a rousing theme for John Galsworthy in his new novel, "The Freelands." Incidentally it points to what may be as a great a menace to our race as the enemy's guns. No people can continue great and free who have not the abiding strength and unity provided by the existence of a large and free population living in close touch with, and deriving their sustenance from, the soil. The Btory, because of its purpose, should not fail to arrest the attention and serious consideration at the hands of earnest-minded folk.

The upper reaches of the storied Wanganui breathe an atmosphere of romance, for many Maori legends are woven round New Zealand's most beautiful river. A trip in one of the comfortable steamers is full of interest, full of novelty, full of charm. You must take this trip. Get full particulars to-day from A. Hatrick and Co., Wanganui; Cook's and Government Tourist Bureaux everywbcra.—Advt j
