AMERICAN STEAMER LOST. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. New York, Nov. 3. The steamer Santa Clara struck u reef at Marshfield, Oregon. Eighteen were drowned. She was en route to San Francisco. Hie passengers were flung into the sea when they attempted to lower the lifeboats.
WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE IN THE STATES. New York, Nov. 3. Women's suffrage was defeated in Massachusetts by a majority of 108,000, in New York State by 205,868, and in Pennsylvania by 100,000 votes. All the returns arc incomplete. Prohibition wa3 defeated in Ohio by a majority of about 50,000. The final suffrage voting indicates little relative changes in the majorities. The result is attributed largely to the foreign vote, also to the spectacular methods adopted by suffragettes to obtain victory.
IMPERIAL CONFERENCE, London, Nov/ .1 Commenting on the statement that Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward are coming to England to consult the Imperial Government, the Times hopes that representatives of other Dominions will be present.
NEW ZEALAND OFFICE. London, Nov. 3, The Hon. Thos. Mackenzie laid the foundation stone of the New Zealand offices in the Strand. He stated that owing to the war the King was unable to perform the ceremony, but his Majesty had promised later to unveil the tablet within the building. '
FREEMASONRY IN SOUTH AFRICA. Johannesburg, Nov. 3. The Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church seriously debated whether Freemasons are Christians and are eligible for membership. By 110 votes to 108 it was decided not to interfere.
NEW AUSTRALIAN IX)AN. Melbourne, Nov. 4. In the Federal House, Mr. Hughes introduced the second War Loan Bill for eighteen millions. The terms are the same as those of the first loan. DROUGHT IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, Nov. 4. The drought in the North Coast district is the worst since 1891. Bush fires are raging widely, and much stock has been burned.
