SALVATION ARMY.

SELF-DENIAL RESULTS. The annual self-denial appeal in connection with the New Plymouth corps of the Salvation Army has closed with a total amount collected of £350, which is close on an £BO increase over last year's amount. Adjutant and Mrs. Home and their workers are to be congratulated on this splendid result. The highest collector, as usual, was Mrs. S. Buick, who gathered in £l5O.

At Wellington on Monday night, before a large and enthusiastic gathering, Commissioner Hodder announced, amidst much cheering, a Dominion increase of £3,290 this year, which brought the total amount raised to £22,392. The other Taranaki contributions to the grand total were: —Inglewood £llO, Stratford £2OO, Eltham £2OO, Hawera £l2O, and Patea £43.

ARMY'S WORK AT TRENTHAM. The request from the Salvation Army for monetary assistance from the local Patriotic Committee for the furtherance of their social work at the military camp elicited a very spirited debate at last night's meeting. The Mayor explained that two menvbers of the army had waited on a sub-committee of the Patriotic Committee, which recommended that £l5O be voted to the cause. The chairman (Mr. Wilson) said the army had spent close on £ISOO on the [social requirements of the Trentham camp, and now that camps were being made elsewhere, wished some assistance. They could make a vote of their patriotic money which was not car-marked. In the discussion the good work of (he Army was commented upon, and it was conceded that, with the Y.M.C.A., it perhaps did more than any other institution. Another point put forward was that the Salation Army in its work has the goodwill of all denominations, and an appeal to the public would have been fully met. After several motions and amendments, it was resolved that the matter ))S left to the new committee.
