DISTRICT NEWS.

KAPOXGA. (From Our Own Correspondents.) The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening last,'Mr, G. Death, chairman, presiding over a full attendance of members. The inspector's report was received, and was considered very satisfactory. It stated that the pupils in all subjects allowed good promise, anil their work reflected great credit on the headmaster and staff. The headmaster's monthly report was also received, and it was resolved to give the scholars their prizes this year. Last year the money was devoted to the Belgian Relief Fund. Messrs. Mills and Guy, and the secretary were appointed to meet the Minister of Education on his visit here on Wednesday, and impress upon him the necessity of having the school enlarged, as it is considerably overcrowded. They were also instructed to bring several other matters relating to the school under his notice. Accounts amounting to £5 were passed for payment, and Mr. Mills was asked to act as inspector for the annual examinations of the Sixth Standard for proficiency. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Kaponga Lodge, M.U., T.0.0.F.. was held in the lodge on Monday evening. N.G. Bro. Bertie presiding over an attendance of about thirty members. Two new members were initiated. It was resolved to forward each member who had gone to the front u Christmas gift, to consist of chocolates and cigarettes.

It is the intention of the local Patriotic Committee to tender Private Priestly, son of Mr. H. Priestly, a public reception at the Post Office to-morrow (Wednesday), evening. The band has been asked to attend, and appropriate speeches will he made.

The memorial services to our lallen soldiers, which was dated for next Sunday, lias, through unforeseen circumstances, had to be postponed till Xov. 21. It is hoped that the public will take heed of this and not' forget to turn up on that date. The memorial will take the form of a combined sen-ice (after the church services), in the Town Hall, when the band and the friendly societies will attend.

The contractors for the new police station have just about completed it, and the building is certainly an acquisition to the town. The residence is an 8roomed bungalow, and is fitted up with every convenience.

A rather mean trick was played on the local Chinaman last evening. He was at the back of his premises when someone entered his shop and stole half a case of oranges. I understand he ias placed the matter in the hands of the police, and that the culprits are in for a bad spin.

LINCOLN ROAD. On Friday afternoon, the local School Committee, with the ladies, assembled at the School to bid Miss Hamerton, the teacher, good-bye. In doing so the chairman (Mr. G. E. Henwood), testified to the good qualities of Miss Hamerton, and the regard with which she is held by the children and their parents. Mrs. Henwood then presented Miss Hamerton with an oak ink-stand as a token of esteem in which she is held by the residents of the district. Miss Hamerton who is leaving for Purangi, suitably replied, and three good cheers were given her.
