CONDUCT OF THE WAR.
MR. ASQUITH'S STATEMENT. EXPECTED TO COVER MUCH GROUND. CRITICISM OF GENERAL STAFF. Received Nov. 2, 10.50 p.m. London, Nov. 2. The Times says that Mr. Asquith's statement is expected to deal with the questions of a smaller Cabinet; the effective use of the General Staff; the diplomacy of the Balkans and the Dardanelles expedition; the broad aspects of the Anglo-French joint action in the Near East; and the recruiting and financial outlook. The paper adds that the discussion on the Dardanelles is likely to produce explanations from Mr. Churchill. The unanimity wherewith many newspapers criticise the General Staff is significant, especially as it is coupled with a new, and even eager, desire to criticise Lord Kitchener. The Daily Telegraph says that the war-seasoned troops at Gailipoii might conceivably he employed in the new sphere. It is understood that General JoQ're's visit indicates that the Allies mean business in the Balkans.
