On Saturday last, the Ladies' Patriotic Committee had their hands full with the Red Cross Mart, good business being done, and while it was not quite .so profitable as the week previous a good sum was netted for the funds. Three more schools have sent contributions to the secretary, and the Fund now stands as follows: — £ ?. d. Total £7B 0 0 The Committee meets to-morrow afternoon (Tueaday), in the Bupper room of the Town Hall, the business being the submitting of the secretary's report and balance-sheet, after which it is intended to discuss and decide in which- direction anil for what patriotic purposes the Committee's energies shall in future be spent. If Inglewood had nothing else to "be proud of they have a fine patriotic and energetic body in this committee, of which any town may justly be proud. ffis Worship the Mayor has received intimation from the Minister of Defence, to the effect that three Inglewood lads are returning by the Willoehra. There is some talk of a public reception, which gives just, a gleam of light denoting that the masculine section of the Patriotic Committee is giving a long yawn as a preface to their returning to the land of the living, from Rip Van Winkle's land. The Town Band has expressed its willingness to turn out and play should a function be held when the invalided soldiers return home.
Captain Gill Inglis, of the Salvation Army, reports progress in connection with the Army's annual self-denial appeal, which this year realised £llß, a,n increase of £33 011 last year j the collectors being: Brothers J. Some mischievious lads got to work with chalk on Saturday night, and being full of patriotism, they visited different business premises where single men of military are arc employed, and wrote all over the dooTs hearty invitations to these young meu to show themselves ".sports" by enlisting, and thus prevent anyone who may be possessed with an evil spirit from branding them as shirkers.
The golfers' Red Cross tournament last Thursday, resulted in three tying. These three will play off next Thursday for tV.e trophy presented by Mr. f!eo. t'Hidgon. The nomination fees brought in something like £'2 for the Red Cross FuniK
