New Plymouth is fortunate in having secured the services of an able business man like Mr. C. H. Burgess has proved himself to be to fill the Mayoral vacancy. The town just now is much in need of capable business direction. Mistakes have in the past been made, expenditure has been incurred unnecessarily, twenty shillings' value has not always been obtained for every pound expended. The cardinal mistake was the undue extending of the town's boundaries. It was not seen at the time, but it is manifest now that so much money has had to be expended in parts that could very well have waited for another ten years or so. But the thing has been done, and the position has to be faced. The satisfactory feature is that it is being faced fairly and squarely by the present Council, and there is not wanting evidence that the town's affairs will soon be placed on an efficient basis. 'Hie Council now has important, business undertakings that call for close and earnest attention on the part of the council, and particularly by the Mayor. In Mr. Burgess the town could not possess a sounder administrator or a more conscientious worker. The position will, of course, entail no little sacrifice on his port, but it is one, we are sure, that will be cheerfully made in the interests of the town.

NEW PLYMOUTH'S NEW MAYOR.
