For the first day of the V.R.C. meeting the weather was fine and there was a big attendance. Results:— MAIDEN PLATE. One mile.—Dame Quickly, 1; Lingle, 2; Vibratory, 3. Nine horses started. Won by two, lengths, a neck between secondhand third. Time, lmin 44see. MARIBYRONG PLATE, for two-year-olds. Six furlongs.—Ettefred, 1: Irish Comedy, 2; Deneb, 3. All the acceptors started. Won by two lengths, two lengths separating second and third. Time, lmin 5 3-4 sec. HOTHAM HANDICAP. One and * half miles.—Hush Money, 1: Prince Bardolph, 2; Meerut, 3. Eleven horses started. Dorby was scratched. From the start Francis Foy and Perambulate led for six furlongs. Then Cetigne f.nd Wallace Isinglass ran to the front. Francis Foy. Perambulate, Patrobas, and Wallace Isinglass led into the straight. Cetigne challenged at the distance, but Patrobas easily smothered the opposition, and amid a great demonstration won by two and a half lengths, Westcourt being three-quarterg of a length behind Cetigne. Time, 2min 37see. MELBOURNE STAKES. One and a quarter miles.—Traquette, 1; Garlin, 2; Cagou, 3. Other starters were: Radnor, Di Gama, Onazer, St. Carwyne, Burrabadeen, Naxbery, Woorak, Mountain Knight, and Carlita. Woorak led to the turn from Traquette and Garlin tint they headed him at the distance, and Traquette won by a short neck, Cagou two lengths away. Time, ?rain
