SOLDIERS' DAY.

FUNCTION AT URUTI The second Soldiers' Day held at Unit! on Thursday was not n great success, the receipts totalling £!!5 15. The fuact tion was opened by Mrs. C. H. Burgeis, president of the New Plymouth branch of the Victoria League, in the presence of one of the largest crowds ever gathered at Uruti. Mrs, Burgess was accompanied by the Rev. A. B. Chappell and Major F. W. Sandford, who briefly addressed the gathering. During the afternoon the different stalls transacted ei.wllent business, and side shows and music added to the pleasure of the function. An especially popular attraction was an electric battery run by Mr. Harrison. The Rev. A. B. Chappell gave an interesting address on the Battle of Trafalgar, and his narrative was illustrated by the display of signals by a party of Urenui Boy Scouti, under the supervision of Major Sandford. The Urcmii "Tin Can Band," in costume, attended in the evening, and many Urenui people assisted in various ways. The promoters of the function wish to thank the following for donations: —Messrs Burgess, Fraser and Co., Sharman and Co., Mr. Cocker (Waitara), Misses Purdie, the Central and West End School children (New Plymouth), and the pupils of Miss Stanford's School (New Plymouth).
