New York, Oct. 28. At Peabody a fire broke out in St. John's parochial school throiu>li a boilerroom accident a few minutes rater (he school assembled. The panic nffi':ted COO children, who dashed to the exits. The hall and stairway leading from the upper floors were choked by shrieking children. Neighbours held blankets-out-side the windows.
Many children were injured and fifty are missing—it is believed they are dead. The lire consumed the brick structure in so short a time that the brigade was unable to effect many rescues. The teachers marshalled the children and the fire drill alarm was given. However, one hysterical child screamed and affected the others and all rushed panicstricken downstairs. Hysterical men and women surrounded the school, attacking the police in vain efforts to veach their children, whose shrieks wcvt h??.rd amid the flames.
TWENTY DEATH.'. Deceived Oct. 28, .".5 p.-.i. New York, Oct. 23. The total death roll at the Penbody fire is fifty. Twelve bodies have been recovered.
