MISHAP TO RACHEL COHEN. On Thursday last a brief message from Port Chalmers conveyed the information] that the auxiliary schooner Rachel Cohen had returned to the southern port in a leaky condition. Further particulars given in a southern exchange state that as far as can be ascertained the schooner made good progress on the southern voyage after leaving Port Chalmers. On October II and 15 she ran into a stiff adverse gale. Her twin oil engines were set going to help the vessel to make some headway, but after, a few hours it was found that she was leaking at the rate of three or four inches an hour, necessitating constant work at the puinps. Unfortunately, the schooner was not equipped with ma-chine-driven bilge pumps, and it is said that the crew demanded that the vessel be put back for repairs. Captain McBride put back to Stewart Island on Friday, the 15th inst., being then about 400 miles off the New Zealand coast, and after calling at Half Moon Bay to notify her owners, he left about daylight the following Wednesday morning, arriving off Taiaroa Heads about midnight, having made a good run up the coast with a stiff southerly gale behind her. The vessel had about; 80 tons of cargo, ineluding 20 tons of coal and stores for the oil works at the Macquarie and Campbell Islands.

NOTES. About two months ago, when the s.s. Physa was at Newcastle (says the Sydney Shipping List), a combined flag representing Great Britain, France, Russia and Belgium was made by a well-known ship-chandler of that port, Mr. ,1. Clarke, and later on presented by Captain Miles, of the Physa, on behalf of himself and his firm to the Savage Club, South Canterbury, New Zealand. Mr. Clarke has now received a letter fro mthe club stating that the flag was o/Temi at auction at a concert in aid of the Rod Cross, and realised the fine sum of £415. Finally the flag was purchased by the club for £7O, and it is to be hung in the club rooms.
