STRATFORD.

(Front Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. Between C< p.m. yesterday and S oVlock this morning, Messrs Robinson and Son s premises in Broadway were entered, and a roll of linoleum wa* stolen. The xlock of linoleum is kept in the passage way at the entrance to the shop, and iron gates are placed outside to lock the placo up securely. The marks of where the thieves lifted and dragged the linoleum over these gates could he plainly seen, and it appears to have been the work of more than one culprit, because one person could not lift it over the iron gates. The police lyive been informed of the robbery. La.st night the Egmont Club held a "Ladies' Evening,'' which was very largely attended by the fair sex. The card tournament resulted in Mrs. Boon being successful. Mr. John Laverty won the gentleman's prize and Miss Besley arid Mr. VV. K Smith were awarded the booby prizes. During the evening the Ciub's orchestra, under Mr. R. Collier (conductor), rendered some fine selections, while Misses Sangster, Maekav, and Rogers and Messrs Wilson. Hull, and lieron contributed musical items, which were greatly appreciated. The gathering, which was voted by the ladies to have been the most enjoyable held by the Clnb, broke up at midnight. Messrs Koch (resident engineer), McClean (chief engineer for the North Island], and fteraghty (permanent way inspector) are at present inspecting the railway lines in this district. Mr. W. J. Lopdeil {county engineer) accompanied the party to Midhirst and inspected the site for the proposed crossing that the County Council contemplate putting in in order to reach their stone depot. A school boy (son of Mr. F. J. McDonald, manager of the Stratford Dairy Company) met with a painful accident. He aud a fellow school boy were playing, and he had the misfortune to fall on a concrete block, breaking his right leg.

This afternoon about half the business premises are closed. It is a pity tlvut the tradesmen could not eome to some definite agreement regarding Thursday afternoon closing - when another holiday occurs in. the week.
