WAREA MATTERS.
To the Editor. Sir,—lf certain persons of this district can find time to criticise other people, they ought to be able to find time to clean the hall out, if it is such an eyesore to some of the old folk. If our new correspondent would undertake to give it a bit of a clean, I for one would not mind giving a hand, as it might decrease the accounts of the eye specialist.—l am, etc.,' A MEMBER OF THE SMOKE SUPPER, WHO IS TOO YOUNG FOR THE FRONT.
Sir, —I was very much struck by the Warea correspondence in Tuesday's issue. For some purpose or other the writer lias cast personal reflections on the young men of this district. The writer doesn't know what she's writing about, or else she is too ignorant to take any notice of the main facts. May I say to this person that eight men have volunteered for the front, namely, A. Ducker, F. Burgess. R. Cassie. M-. Orr, and H. Burrows, the last-nav/M fighting and dying to help keep a 'lome over the writer's head. She also says that a certain young man is getting married for the sole purpose of avoiding going to the front. Please allow me to warn her that the libel laws are still in existence. This young man and his future wife are far more popular than ever she will be. He's been in the district for years, and has always bepn found to he honest and straightforward in every way. May I Suggest to this woman, whoever she may be. that she is not fortunate enough to obtain a young man. 1 also refer to the entertainment which she says was given to the young men by a newly-married benedict. Xow, Sir, don't you think it rather hard if a .married man cannot entertain a few of his personal friends without being pilloried in public print? The entertainment was given in a decent and orderly way. Everyone was respectable, and nothing happened to justify your correspondent's letter. Trusting she will in future refrain from writing such unwarranted letters to the paper.—l am. etc., HARRY BRUNSDON. Newall Road, Oct. 27.
Sir, —Your correspondent is a long way out in tlie number of recruits that has left this district for the front. The writer mentioned three that have gone, but I can name eleven that have gone, and one (Corporal Burrows) has given his life for his country. All the first men who went with the main body have been wounded. Out of the three your correspondent mentions two are still on New Zealand soil. It seems as if these three were favorites of your correspondent's, and the ones that went to fight for our country could not have been worth mentioning. T might also state that some have since enlisted and others are going to enlist as soon as they can get away. I think if every district were to send as many as this little one has done, according to the number of young men in it, there would not be a shortage of men at the front. As regards the "smoke supper" that was held recently, given by the newly-made benedict, I might state that he is a newcomer to the district, and the least your correspondent could do was to leave him alone, but I suppose it worries your correspondent to think that some can get married and others can't. We are holding another "smoke supper" next Saturday night, and your correspondent i 9 cordially invited. We do not want a spy sent this time to report. Perhaps your correspondent will bring some music, as we always have a sing-song of patriotic songs, etc., and finish up by singing "God Save the King."—l am, etc., ANOTHER WHO WAS AT THE SMOKE SUPPER.
