MR. BURGESS RETURNED UNOPPOSED. INSTALLATIoIToN MONDAY. Mr. Charles If. Burgess was yesterday elected Mayor of New Plymouth without opposition. The nomination of Mr. Burgess was supported by Mcsdames Dockrill, Firth, Marshall, Miss Hamertoo, . Messrs Newton King, R, George, Hal, Goodacre, ,). Clarke, J. McLcod, L. A. Nolan, P. Staiutou, J. W. Pat-on; W. Healy, J. T). Sole, J. B. Connett, W. Am* bury, and C. Carter. It was fully expected that Mr. S. J. Smitti would contest an election with Mr. Burgesß for the Mayoralty. Mr, Smith resigned his seat on the Borough Council for this purpose, ' and on Tuesday night he addressed the electors, but when nominations closed at ; noon yesterday Mr. Smith had not been nominated. A special meeting of the Borough Council will be held on Monday evening at 7.30 o'clock, when the Mayoral installation ceremony will take place. CHANGES ON THE COUNCIL Nominations also dosed yesterday for the vacancy on the Borough Council caused by the resignation of Mr. S. J. Smith. The following two nominations were reserved: —Mr. Frank E. Wilson, nominated by Messrs W. N. Ewing, S W. Shaw, C. F. Foote, W. F. Brooking, R. T. McQuade, and R. C. Hughes; and ' Mr. F. H. Jackson, nominated by Messrs W. U. lieid, A. E. Svkes, A. S. Brooker, J. 1). Sole, C. T. Rundle. and P. Lealand. •• The election will take place next Wednesday, the polling booths being open ' from !) a.m. to 7 p.m. The election of Mr. Burgess as Mayor creates a further vacancy on the Borough Council. Nominations for this seat close at noon on Wednesday, November 10, and an election will be, held on Wednesday, November 17. It is interesting to note -that Mr. A, H. Johnstone, a member of the Borough Council, has offered Uiia services to thq Defence Department, and if he is accent' ed a further vacancy will be caused. ' '
