STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Yesterday. The toll-gate at Waipuku had a very busy morning on Monday last, charging tolls to motorists going to the Waverley races. 28 ears passed through-the gate, and close on £6 was the day's takings. The Wanganui Education Board have notified the Taranaki Rugby Union that they have given a grant of £5 towards the Alf. Bayly Memorial Scholarship. Lieut.-Colonel Cosgrove, Dominion Chief Scout, inspected the local troop last evening, and expressed satisfaction at tho work done by them. He addressed the boys on "Scout Law," and at the conclusion three cheers were given him for his able address. The Defence Department require twelve infantrymen and 3 mounted men to proceed to Trentham on Friday morning. Liout. Gray advices that the Defence Office will be open all day Thursday for those who wish to have the opportunity of going straight into camp. In a letter to his mother who resides at Stratford, Private James Gedge states that he received a slight scalp wound during the big fight of the Wellingtons, but was only laid aside for a few days. While driving near the railway crossing in Fenton Street on Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Reid, of Pembroke Road, was thrown out owing to the horse taking fright at a train, and the trap upending in consequence of the shafts falling (owing to the breakage of supporting straps), and sticking in the road. The sufferer, who had a kneecap and ankle injured, besides being much shaken, after receiving medical attention was taken home.
