Hobhouse, AUeu, and WhiteBouse, on behalf of ariti-eonseriptionists ia the Souse of Commons, have issued a manifesto to the effect that they hare rations for belief that conscription win be disastrous to a successful prosecution " ' of the war, and will destroy the basis of national unity in Britain. The five anftes of the war are: Maintaining as , impregnable and inviolable navy; manufacturing munitions herself for the Allies; financing the Allies; financing the Dominions; and raising and maintaining an army running into millions. They say: "We have suddenly with- < sswn something like three million men from the ■ industries of Britain and an indefinite increase will entail heavy increase of expenditure, and hamper the Allies' cause by reducing our, capacity to assist them. The Times, in a leader, commenting on the victory of General Botha, says: "He might well be able to come to London, where his experience and devotion to the welfare of the Empire would be invaluable to the council. The reasons for similar visits of representatives from Australia and New Zealand are specially strong just now. "It is plain that with the appointment of Major-Oeneral Monro the enterprise at the Dardanelles, where the Australians have played so heroic a part, enters a new phase. We do not doubt that the force of these considerations is not lost on Mr. Bonar Law."
