Reid in *»f»>' ence to the non-renewal of the latter**term, are published. ' • Sir G. H. Reid pointed out tliat he gave up his career at the bar and in the Federal House, representing four thousand pounds per'annum, to take up a position of great expense, which is , looked upijn as an official and a not uncertain political post, thus entitling' him to expect a renewal for another, term'if ■ lie discharged his duties satisfactorily. Subsequently he received an implied - promise of renewal from Mr. Cook.
The Government correspondence concludes with a letter from Mr Melton, stating that the present Government declines to recognise the right of the previous Government lo bind successors by verbal arrangement in respect to future vacancies in the public service.
