TUKF TOPICS. ((By "Moturoa,") The Waveriey-Waitotara annual race meeting—always a popular outingshould attract a big crowd of Taranaki sports to-day. In addition, special trains have been arranged for Palmerston North, Marton and Wanganui patrons, and the grandstand threatens to be taxed to its utmost. The fine acceptances received do credit to Tarnaki stables, whence most of the runners come. The course is in good order, thanks to recent showers, and Secretary W. Macfarlane lias all arrangements complete for the gathering. Mr. Tom Cameron will do the starting, and Mr. R. H. Aldworth, will be in his usual place in the* judgc'3_ box. It is hardly necessary to ment'lon that this is a purely patriotic meeting, all profits going to the War Funds. There are people who condemn horse racing in war time, but they should remember that this season's racing will—at a low estimate —enrich the War Funds to the extent of a quarter of a million! "Killsports," under present circumstances, are deserving of our sympathy! To-day's racing opens with the Brewer Handicap (six fnrlongs), for which no less than fourteen have been paid up. These include Rewi Poto, Tree Lucerne, Astor, Denise Orme, King Chiara,' Tyson, Lady Middleton, and others, and should be the best-contested race of the day. Avon Park Is mentioned as an unlikely starter, and, possibly Tree Lucerne and Denise Orme will run prominently.

Fifteen rather ordinary performers remain in the Morton .Memorial Maiden Race (seven furlongs). The Englishbred Mareavis will carry most of the Wanganui money, but Duraae and W4ite Bkze should also come in for support. / (Another Wanganui-ite in St. Gate may be expected to carry most coin in th« Handicap Hurdles (1% miles), for which nine are expected to see the post. White Plume is another dangerous horse from the same quarter, and with Rexer in the field as well, a good race is assured.

Those -whose penchant is "Tatts," raffles, sweeps, etc., are invited to "pick" the Wilson Stakes. Nineteen are engaged in this four furlongs scramble, and only a plucky (or foolhardy) sport would wager mucfi on the result. If quick-(beginning counts for it does!— Bivouac, Interlude and Kdelio should all be given a chance.

The ten accepted for in the Cup.are a fairly even lot, there being only fifteen pounds between top aiid weights. Traarose has recent form to recommend him over, the distance, one and a quarter miles, but there is no reason why Welcome Nugget and Tangiwai should not give the chestnut a good race.

Scratching may account for a fair section of the dozen in the Plying Handicap (six furlongs), hut if King Cliiara is reserved he may be a warm order. In his absence Depredation and Bivouac will carry heaps of money. It is hard to estimate the strength of the field likely to contest the Moumahaki Stakes (one mile), but several good horses have been paid up for, including Welcome Nugget, Lady Amai and Melodist. The latter comes as-a poAlar fancy from Bulls —the home of nfiray "hot orders."

Another conundrum of much tonnage presents itself in the Jackson Memorial Stakes, five furlongs, twenty horses being carded. The running in the Wilson Stakes may shed some light on the subject, but Zion, Tiora and Fidelio are all fairly smart over the distance.

Tlie Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting will be concluded to-day, the chief event being tlie Champion Plate, in which Desert Cold will endeavour to show Xoncs. Chortle and Co., the way to skip over ten furlongs. It should be a race worth watching. Bob Barlow is only taking one horse to Waverley. Fidelio.'Tlie black daughter of Finland—Cantatriee will lit ridden In- Ray Olive, a diminutive apprentice of Barlow's. Olive, who will also have the mount on Lady Amai, is one of Taranaki's most-promising riders, and many successes will come his vrav ia the near future.
