Rwiler's Rome correspondent states that the Pope, in an autograph letter, begged King Albert to initiate steps towards peace. The King answered in the negative, thanking Pope Benedict for his promise to use all his influence to obtain the evacuation of Belgium as a condition of peace. The King concludes emphatically, declaring: "Never will I lay down the sword while my country is in slavery." The Pope is greatly disappointed £t the result. THE REPORT DENTED. Received Oct. 22, 8.5 p.m. Rome, Oct. 21. It Observatore Romano denies that <he Pope has written to King Albert.
