"THE MIKADO."
NEXT WEEK, This morning, at eight o'clock, the box plans for the coming production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado,"'by the New Plymouth Operatic Society will be opened at Colliers' music warehouse, where there will doubtless be a big demand for Beats. Messrs. Collier and Co. tell us they have quite as many countryorders for seats as they have for any of J. C. Williamson's attractions; so that, what with the tickets the members have sold, intending patrons •of "The Mikado" will have to get in early to secure good seas. "The Mikado'' was first produced at the. Savoy Theatre, London, on Saturday, March 14, 1885, and reproduced on Wednesday, November 6, 1S!)5, under the management of Mr. D'Oylv Carte. There is something- in the plot of "The Mikado" that is irresistibly fascinating. The story is continually turning a corner, and the ending of the tale, although quite within the bounds of possibility, is not indicated in any war by anything in the first act, or iii the' first half of the second. The numerous situations are typically Gilbertian, and the most delicate satire is employed in the unfolding of the story. A novel feature of the production, of which the effect only will be seen by tile audience, is the elaborate arrangements being made for lighting of the scenery and the ballet. Mr. P. Oldershuw, of'the Empire Theatre, lias planned an e_fl'ective display of the beautiful scenery,' and illuminating the fascinating and dainty steps of the ballet girls. It is confidently anticipated that this year's ballet will be unanijmoualy votsd "the best yst,"
