RIFLE SHOOTING.

TEE SHIELD MATCH. A CLOSE CONTEST. Ye.stfrday, a team of eight men frr.ifl the New (Plymouth Defence Rifle Glut journeyed to Patea to endeavor to bring the Challenge Shield to New Plymouth. They failed in their quest by a very narrow margin, for the match resulted ill a tie, and Patea thus retains the shield. During the years that the shield has been in competition there have been some very close finishes, but yesterday's tie provides a record in that respeet. The day was not an ideal one for shooting, a strong and variable cross wind, together with a tricky light combining to baffle the marksmen. Under the circumstances, therefore, the shooting was particularly good, a feature being its evenness. The visitors were niOßt hospitably entertained by the Patea men, lunch being provided at the Albion Hotel, "whilst afternoon tea was dispensed on the range. Detailed scores: PATEA.
